Etsy Shop Announcement

Hello everyone!  I know I haven't been very present here in the blog but rest assured I've been keeping very busy.  Last month I finally opened up my Etsy shop for Lillys Home Designs I even made my first sale which was very exiting!

I have been wanting to do this for an awfully long time and I finally got the courage to just do it!  I was very nervous and excited at the same time, I still am.  I don't know exactly what I'm doing but I'm learning.  Just like I did with the blog and the furniture.  I didn't take any blogging or furniture painting classes I just learned as I went, through trials and errors, lots of errors but I'm still doing it and I'm glad I've stuck it out this far.  I'm very happy with this stage of my life and I'm looking forward to what's in store for the future.

I'm very fortunate to have the unconditional support of my husband who is very patient with me, he helps me a lot and pushes me to believe in myself.  The nights have been long while I tinker around with all the new things I'm learning and tweak around to fix things.  I've been so busy I actually started using the dishwasher for the first time in my life.  I don't know why I waited so long, that thing is a life saver.

I will continue to blog because I love sharing my home projects and furniture work here with you guys.  I would appreciate it if you took some time to follow me on social media where I share with more frequency and it's easier to keep in touch.

Now through 7.05.16 I'm running a 15% sale on all available items on my Etsy shop.

I would love it if you guys took some time to stop by my online shop.  Some of my pieces are located on the sidebar and my Shop tab below the header.  As always thank you for your continued support!

Curbside Cabinet Makeover

Curbside Cabinet Makeover

A few weeks ago I shared pictures on Facebook and Instagram of a curbside cabinet that I brought home to give it a makeover.  This cabinet had lots of dirt, cat hair and cat scratches.  It was pretty gross but nothing a little, no who am I kidding, a lot of elbow couldn't fix.

I started by vacuuming the cabinet inside and out.  Then I wiped it down, it was filthy I used up all my Clorox wipes.  I also cleaned it with TSP.  Next I removed all the hardware and the kick-plate.  I filled all the holes and cat scratches with wood filler.  Then I sanded the top off to bare wood and lightly sanded the body and areas where I had applied the wood filler.

I made the new holes for the new hardware and got a piece of wood cut to size for the new bottom kick-plate.  There was nothing wrong with the kick-plate it came with. Its just that this cabinet really wanted to be a boy cabinet so it needed a straight bottom.  The other kick-plate looked like a girly skirt on it.  I also bought a pack of wooden buttons, because it was missing a few and I needed to cover the screw holes on the new kick plate.  I painted the cabinet a rich medium grey and stained the top and sealed it with multiple coats of polycrylic.

The back cover panel had holes in it so I bought a new one and attached it with screws.  I painted the inside of the back panel in the same grey as the body and sealed it.  I left a piece of wood in the middle exposed and the sides because I like the way the wood tone looks with the grey.  I also lined the drawer with a fun mustache fabric using Modge Podge and sealed it with Polycrylic too.

Now there's no mistaking this cabinet for a girl, it's definitely a boy cabinet. No more tiny little ceramic knobs or frilly skirt.  Now its got chunky hardware, mustache fabric, straighter lines, and two tone stain with masculine grey paint.

I brought it in to the kitchen for a little staging fun, because that's just the way I am, I like staging pieces.  I actually had to take down my recycling bins from the wall to take these pictures.

If only the person who left this by this cabinet by the curbside could see this makeover!  Can you believe I found this cabinet on the same street, the house right next door to where I found this Roadside Side Table that I gave a makeover to months ago?

Front Door Makeover With Modern Masters

I finally gave my front door a makeover with Modern Masters Front Door Paint.  I should probably warn you that this post is before and after picture heavy.  This project has been a long time coming.  We've been wanting to up the curb appeal of our home since day one and we have slowly been working on it.  When I say slowly, I mean turtle speed slow.  Last year we replanted some shrubs, added a little pine tree in the front, switched out the red mulch for brown mulch and called it a day.  This year we replaced all the windows, happy dance!

NOW!
A little over a month ago, just as spring was ringing in (perfect timing), I was contacted by Modern Masters to see if I wanted to try out some of their paint products.  When I saw that they offered Never Fades Front Door paint I knew this would be a great opportunity to spruce up our front doors.  Painting the doors also gave us the push we needed to tackle some other outdoor projects that we hadn't gotten around to.

Our house has two front door entrances which is kinda weird and one was painted blue and the other one was left untouched in its' original pre-primed state.

To get started on this project, I cleaned the doors with TSP, the blue door got a light sanding beforehand.  I bought a quart of Zinsser Bulls Eye and had it tinted grey for the white door.  The blue door did not need to be primed so I just went ahead and started painting it.

We chose the color "Elegant" which is a rich, black shade.  I shook the can really well and used a stirring stick to mix all the ingredients well.  The first thing I noticed upon opening the can of Front Door Paint was that the consistency of the paint was really thick.  I used a 2 inch angled brush and a 4 inch foam roller to apply the paint.  The paint went on smooth, and dried quickly.  One of my favorite things about this paint is that I was able to re-coat the doors after only one hour.  Which meant that I could finish this project in just a few hours and the doors were fully dry and ready to close within a couple of hours of finishing painting.

My doors required 3 coats of paint for complete coverage.  I did end up applying a fourth coat of paint, only because I didn't stir the paint before the third coat so the sheen was uneven.

***Tip, always stir your paint while painting and between coats so that you get a nice uniform color and sheen***

When I was done painting the doors I knew it was time to finally switch out our old house numbers and mailbox.  We had purchased them months ago but just never got around to it.  The old mailbox was very rusted and small.  We updated our house numbers with some sleek, simple ones and a DIY project that I will share a how to on later.

We also changed the light fixtures by the garage.  I bought those over a year ago because I found them on clearance but never really got around to changing them until now.  Now that we have an idea of how we want the front of our house to look we are going to change the color of the light fixtures to match the one we will be getting for the other door.

We wanted to paint the garage door in the same color as the doors but I didn't think I had enough paint left.  I really think that it will tie things up pretty nicely.  So that is a project we will be doing in the future, along with some other ideas we have to spruce up the curb appeal.

This Front Door Makeover with Modern Masters really kicked up the curb appeal of our home a notch and gave us the motivation we needed to kick start on some other outdoor projects.  We have since done a few other improvements that I will be sharing soon!  We are so pleased with how the curb appeal of our house is looking!  Even a couple of our neighbors stopped by to say the house was looking gorgeous!  This really was a perfect Memorial Day weekend project!  Did anyone else work on improving the curb appeal or some other fun outdoor projects on this beautiful Memorial Day weekend?
